Poland — 38 million inhabitants, 1000 years of history, 17 UNESCO sites. The mortgage signature, kerosene lamp and mushroom soup were invented here. Here are 12 facts.
- Poland is Europe's 9th largest country (312,696 km²) — bigger than Italy, smaller than Germany. Borders 7 countries: DE, CZ, SK, UA, BY, LT, RU (Kaliningrad).
- Wieliczka — world's oldest operating salt mine. Salt mined continuously for 700 years (13th c. - 2007). One of first UNESCO sites (1978). 245 km corridors on 9 levels.
- Polish 'na zdrowie' (cheers) before drinking has 1000 years of tradition. In the Middle Ages people checked if alcohol was safe — hence the custom of toasting.
- Marie Skłodowska-Curie — 2 Nobel Prizes (physics 1903, chemistry 1911). The only person in 2 different scientific fields. Polonium (Po, named after Poland) and radium (Ra) discovered in her Paris lab.
- Vodka — invented in Poland (15th c., Małopolska region). Oldest document: 1405 (Sandomierz). Polish Żubrówka with bison grass has 600 years — EU PDO protected.
- Kraków's Mariacki Tower — hourly bugle call (hejnał) since the 14th c. The trumpeter doesn't finish the melody — in 1241 Tatars killed the watchman with an arrow while playing. Tradition lasts 800 years non-stop.
- Poland has 23 national parks and 1500 nature reserves. Białowieża (UNESCO) — Europe's oldest primeval forest, sanctuary of European bison (500 animals).
- Tatra Mountains — Europe's youngest mountains (20 million years). 200 lakes, highest peak Rysy (2499 m). Zakopane: 30k residents + 5 million tourists annually.
- Łysa Góra has Poland's oldest monastery (Holy Cross, 10th c.). According to legend, witches held sabbaths here on Midsummer night.
- Poland has the world's largest stork population — ~45,000 pairs (25% of global population). Żywkowo village (Warmia-Masuria) — 50 nests, 100 residents.
- Wrocław has 300+ dwarves (Wrocław Dwarfs). Symbol of the Orange Alternative from the 1980s. First miniature: 'Papa Dwarf' (2001), today a tourist attraction.
- Poland gave the world 18 Nobel laureates (literature: Sienkiewicz, Reymont, Miłosz, Szymborska, Tokarczuk; physics/chemistry: Curie x2; peace: Wałęsa). Average: 1 Nobel/10 years.
